LOS ANGELES (June 1, 2015) — LA MARATHON LLC announced today a record breaking $4,019,747 cumulative funds raised to support 101 charities who participated in the 2015 ASICS LA Marathon. This is the largest amount of money raised since the marathon’s first year of charity affiliation in 1988.
“We are thrilled to have surpassed our goal of $4 million in funds raised by our charity partners,” said Tracey Russell, Chief Executive of LA MARATHON LLC. “Social responsibility is one of the corner stones of our company. We are very proud of our charity partners’ achievement and look forward to working with this key aspect of our marathon and additional events to increase the fundraising in the future.”
The funds raised by the nonprofits in partnership with LA MARATHON LLC included over 4,500 charity-specific runners who participated in the ASICS LA Marathon, the ASICS LA Marathon charity relay, and the LA BIG 5K. It was also the third year in a row that overall registration for the ASICS LA Marathon sold out, with more than 26,000 registrants.
Charities whose fund raising efforts stood out include:
Team World Vision, The Dream Center, and Team-In-Training make up the top three fundraisers and raised close to $1.1 million, combined.
Kitten Rescue is a volunteer run organization devoted to finding loving homes for unwanted cats and kittens; Kitten Rescue raised over $75,000 to continue their mission-based work in Los Angeles.
Lupus LA was able to leverage the LA BIG 5K to help their 130 charity runners raise over $95,000 to enable the organization to fund medical research focused on finding the causes of, and a cure for lupus.
P.S. Arts: This first year charity participant is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities. P.S. Arts surpassed both their number of runners and fund raising target.
“Being an official charity partner of the ASICS LA Marathon not only benefited us financially, but bonded our community together and re-energized our supporters. We reached close to 600 new donors, raised over $62,000 and were overwhelmed by our team’s enthusiasm and dedication to crossing the finish line in support of arts education,” said Allison Schaub, Advancement Associate for P.S. Arts.
Charity support and giving back has been an integral part of the ASICS LA Marathon since the early days of the race. Beginning with the third race in 1988, charities collected per-mile pledges from runners, which raised $250,000. The charity program has since expanded and evolved significantly to the benefit of the official charity partners, which this year’s result of over $4 million exemplifies.
Charity applications for the February 2016 marathon events are available now. Inquiries about the charity program may be addressed to Rachel Sanchez at rachel.sanchez@lamarathon.com.
